The Part of Me
That Stayed
I don't think I've ever known
how to explain what you became to me.
Because calling you a friend
feels like I'm shrinking something
that was never small enough
to fit inside that word.
And calling you anything else
would make it sound like
I know exactly what this is.
I don't.
I just know it's real.
I know I messed up.
And sometimes that's the hardest part—
knowing that the person
who mattered so much to me
was hurt by my own hands.
There are moments I wish
I could go back to,
not to change everything,
but just to become the person
you deserved me to be
before I learned the hard way.
But you never let my mistakes
become the only thing you saw in me.
You could've treated me differently.
You could've turned cold.
You could've decided
I wasn't worth another ounce of kindness.
But somehow,
you still treated me like a human being
even when I wasn't proud
of the person I had been.
And Bliss...
I don't think you understand
what that did to me.
You found me in places
I didn't know how to climb out of.
You sat beside battles
I couldn't explain.
You helped me carry things
I was too tired to name.
And somewhere along the way,
I realized something painful:
while I was trying to help you
through your storms,
you were quietly becoming
one of the reasons
I believed I could make it through mine.
Maybe that's why losing the relationship
never felt like losing everything.
Because somehow,
something deeper survived.
Something without a title.
Something that doesn't need
to be called friendship
to be important.
Something that simply exists.
And I wish I could make you see yourself
through my eyes for just one moment.
Because you'd understand
why your absence can feel so loud.
Why certain memories
still feel like rooms
I haven't learned how to leave.
Why a person can be gone from your life
and somehow still occupy
a permanent corner of your heart.
You're not just someone
I used to know.
You're part of the person
I became because I knew you.
And that's the part that scares me.
Because people tell you
that eventually you forget.
But what if I don't want to?
What if some people
aren't meant to be forgotten?
What if they're meant to be carried?
So, Bliss,
if I have to live with the memory
of everything we were,
everything we survived,
everything I broke,
and everything you still gave me—
then I promise I will.
I'll carry it carefully.
I'll carry the lessons.
I'll carry the gratitude.
I'll carry the parts of you
that changed me.
Because you are not just a chapter
I finished reading.
You're a sentence
that somehow continued
inside me long after the page ended.
And maybe one day
I'll stop hurting over what happened.
Maybe one day
I'll look back without wishing
I could rewrite anything.
But I don't think I'll ever stop
being grateful that it was you.
You were there
when parts of me were falling apart.
And somehow,
without even realizing it,
you left pieces of yourself behind
that helped me put mine back together.
So if you ever wonder
whether you mattered—
you did.
More than I said.
More than I showed.
More than I probably knew
how to understand at the time.
And if someday
you completely forget
the sound of my voice,
the conversations we had,
or the person I used to be—
I hope you never forget this:
You changed someone's life.
You changed mine.
And no matter how much time passes,
there will always be a part of me
that quietly remembers your name
and thinks,
"I'm glad I knew her."
Because Bliss... you aren't just someone I have to remember.
You're someone I have to live with inside the person I've become.
